Description of the FLOW impact flow meter


FLOW flow meters are instruments for measuring the flow of powdered bulk materials. The operation of FLOW flow meters is based on the principle of measuring the impact force of an accelerated mass.

As described below, the path taken by the material is as follows:

/ ENTERING THE EQUIPMENT : When the material enters the machine, it is important to ensure that the flow is as constant and even as possible.

/ MATERIAL SETTLING : Chains and baffles in this part of the machine ensure optimum de-aeration and distribution of the material.

/ CALIBRATION OF THE HORIZONTAL SECTION : A guillotine after the de-aeration chains keeps the settling chamber at the right level and ensures that only the bottom layer of material passes through. This guillotine can be operated from outside the machine using two bolts to allow more material to pass if necessary. The material then leaves the settling chamber by overflowing.

/ FREE-FALL ACCELERATION OF THE MATERIAL : The flow of material falls into a cone which guides it vertically in free fall. This cone ensures constant acceleration of the material over a height of around 980 mm.

/ HITTING THE IMPACT PLATE : The flow of material is deflected from its vertical trajectory by a metal plate. As it modifies the momentum, this deflection creates a reaction force on the impact plate. The impact plate (also known as the deflection plate) is suspended from a weigh lever system, which transmits only the horizontal component of the reaction force to a load cell.

/ DEVICE OUTLET : After deflection, the material flow is released through an outlet flange.


FLOW impact flow meter controller : The SCMIII controller receives data and signals directly from the feeder’s sensors, including weight, speed, offset and belt index. It calculates flow rates and totals and generates the control signal. Information and alerts generated during feeder operation are transmitted to the PDU console.
